A new report published by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation sheds some insight on deaths from injuries including preventative measures states can take to keep people safe.
The report focuses on ten indicators known and proven to reduce the number of injuries and save lives. States are given a point for each indicator and ranked based on their results. States with the highest death rate from injuries are New Mexico (97.8 deaths per 100,000 people), Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, and Mississippi. States with the lowest death rates from injuries include New Jersey (36.1 deaths per 100,000 people), New York, Massachusetts, California, and Connecticut.
The report’s conclusion is that millions of injuries could be prevented if states adopted prevention initiatives such as a universal helmet law for all motorcyclists, mandatory ignition interlocks for people who have been convicted of drunk driving, prescription drug monitoring programs, and measures to protect school age children from getting concussions.
